Poloniex review: our verdict for 2026

Poloniex is a custodial cryptocurrency exchange, but its security history and account restrictions deserve more attention than its marketing. Our view: consider it only after checking that your country, intended trading pair and withdrawal network are supported. For a first crypto purchase, compare local eligibility and cash-out options before choosing an exchange.

Checked October 20, 2026: This update supersedes the historical review below. In particular, the older claims that Poloniex is a strictly regulated US exchange, has not been hacked since 2014, offers universally free withdrawals, or guarantees anonymous trading should not guide a deposit. The older coin list, volume figure, 0.125% fee ceiling, $2,000 unverified limit and product descriptions are not verified current terms. The Bitfinex reference is an error, not a Poloniex feature. The existing editorial score is not a fresh liquidity measurement or a regulatory certification.

Fees: what to check before buying or selling

There is no verified universal 0.125% maximum in this update. Use the official fee page and your logged-in account for the rate applicable to your order. The public fee page requires client-side rendering, so we could not independently read a current numeric schedule during this check.

Poloniex’s account API documentation provides account-specific maker and taker rates, a TRX-discount flag and symbol-specific rates. Its example response is documentation, not a quote for your account. A limit order that immediately executes can take liquidity; do not assume every limit order earns a maker rate.

Withdrawal costs are separate from trading fees. Poloniex’s delisting guidance directs users to their wallet for the latest withdrawal fees. Check the selected network, minimum withdrawal and net amount received. For a small purchase, that fixed withdrawal cost and the bid–ask spread can matter more than a small difference in trading fees.

Safety, regulation and verification

Poloniex acknowledged a hack in its November 2023 incident announcement, saying it would reimburse affected funds and gradually restore deposits and withdrawals. That promise is not independent proof of reserves, completed reimbursement or future security. It directly contradicts the old assertion that there had been no hack after 2014. We do not quote a loss estimate because the exchange announcement does not establish one.

US origins do not establish present US authorization. Poloniex’s 2019 separation announcement ended US customer trading from November 1, 2019. Separately, the SEC’s Poloniex case summary describes a 2021 settlement concerning unregistered exchange activity from July 2017 through November 2019. This is historical enforcement, not evidence of a current license. Check today’s eligibility terms for your citizenship and residence before registering; do not use a VPN to bypass restrictions.

Do not treat account creation as a guarantee of withdrawal access without KYC. Poloniex’s account restriction guidance says risk controls can limit some or all account features and require documents and verification. It also specifies a 24-hour withdrawal restriction after changing 2FA. We could not verify a universal current no-KYC allowance, so the historical dollar limit below should not be relied on.

A practical deposit-to-withdrawal checklist

  1. Confirm account eligibility and complete any requested identity checks before transferring funds.
  2. Open the exact market you plan to trade. Inspect the spread and order-book depth at your intended order size; exchange-wide volume does not establish that you can exit a small altcoin position.
  3. Generate a current deposit address. Match both the asset and network, and include any required memo or tag. Do not reuse an old saved address without checking it.
  4. Send a small test deposit, then inspect the order preview and applicable fee before trading.
  5. Test a withdrawal to a wallet you control, accounting for fees and minimums. Keep transaction IDs and contact official support if the transfer is restricted. A successful test reduces operational uncertainty but cannot guarantee future access.

For alternatives, read our Coinbase review and Kraken review, checking regional availability for each. Our hardware wallet comparison explains options for holding assets outside an exchange; self-custody also requires careful recovery-phrase management.

FAQ

Is Poloniex safe to use in 2026?

We would not describe it as risk-free or recommend treating it as long-term storage. Its own 2023 hack acknowledgement and documented account restrictions make custody and access risk central to the decision. Two-factor authentication helps protect a login but does not insure exchange-held funds.

Can US customers trade on Poloniex?

Poloniex announced the end of US customer trading in 2019. The legacy description of a US-based, strictly regulated exchange is not a basis for eligibility. Check current terms and use a service permitted where you live.

Does Poloniex require KYC?

Verification can be required to resolve account restrictions. Do not rely on the historical claim of anonymous trading or a $2,000 daily allowance; confirm the requirements shown in your account before depositing.

Are Poloniex withdrawals free?

Do not assume so. Check the fee and minimum for the specific asset and network in your wallet. Trading fees, network withdrawal charges and any third-party purchase charges are different costs.

Can I sell crypto for cash on Poloniex?

Selling into a crypto pair gives you the quote asset, which may be a stablecoin rather than money in a bank account. Confirm an eligible fiat off-ramp, its verification requirements and its fees before buying. This update does not verify a universally available bank withdrawal service.

Key Disadvantage of Poloniex

Unreliable Security due to Previous Hack

Poloniex, a popular cryptocurrency exchange, experienced a security breach in 2014 when 12.3% of their Bitcoin supply was stolen. The hacker discovered a bug in the system which allowed them to withdraw more than their actual balance. However, the exchange owner, Tristan D’Agosta, managed to pay everyone back by temporarily increasing trading fees and contributing his own money. Since then, Poloniex has taken security seriously and has not been hacked again.
