Walrus WAL airdrop status in 2026
Walrus Mainnet and its WAL utility token launched on 27 March 2025. The testnet-farming steps in the original guide no longer establish eligibility for a new airdrop. However, the official Walrus NFT claim portal remains online as of 13 August 2026, so a wallet that already contains an eligible Walrus Airdrop NFT should still check its allocation there.
Walrus has conducted at least two NFT-based community distributions:
- Pre-Mainnet community airdrop: eligible Walrus and Sui community contributors received a soulbound NFT containing a WAL allocation. Redemption opened with Mainnet in March 2025. Walrus assigned 4% of the five-billion-token supply to this pre-Mainnet distribution.
- Post-Mainnet staker airdrop: more than 80,000 direct WAL-staking wallets qualified from a 30 June 2025 snapshot. Claiming opened in August 2025. Allocation considered the amount, duration and consistency of direct WAL staking; liquid-staking positions were excluded.
The Foundation did not publish a claim deadline on the pages reviewed for this update, and the portal still invites wallets holding a Walrus Airdrop NFT to connect. That is evidence the interface remains available, not a promise that every old NFT is redeemable in every jurisdiction. The snapshot criteria are historical: staking now cannot change eligibility for either completed snapshot.

| Was there a later staker distribution? | Yes. Its snapshot was 30 June 2025 and claims opened in August 2025. |
| Is another WAL airdrop guaranteed? | No. The allocation reserves more tokens for post-Mainnet user drops, but no new snapshot or claim schedule was found. |
How to check an existing WAL allocation
- Open only
https://claim.walrus.xyz. Walrus' legal terms state that this is the only WAL claim website. - Connect the same Sui wallet that holds the Walrus Airdrop NFT. The NFT is the claim ticket; merely having used the testnet is not enough.
- Review the displayed allocation and transaction before signing. Claiming requires a small amount of SUI for network gas but no payment to Walrus.
- After confirmation, verify the transaction and WAL balance in a reputable Sui explorer or wallet.
Do not transfer the NFT to a stranger, enter a seed phrase, or pay an “activation” or “late-claim” fee. Walrus says eligibility is determined by the Foundation, not by third-party points calculators or airdrop websites. Regional restrictions and wallet screening may apply under the official terms.
WAL tokenomics and utility
WAL has a maximum supply of 5 billion tokens and launched with 1.25 billion in initial circulation. More than 60% of supply is allocated to community-oriented categories, but that does not mean 60% is a direct user airdrop.
| Allocation | Share | Release notes |
|---|---|---|
| Community reserve | 43% | 690 million available at launch; remainder unlocks linearly through March 2033. |
| Walrus user drop | 10% | 4% pre-Mainnet and 6% post-Mainnet; direct distributions are fully unlocked. |
| Storage subsidies | 10% | Linear unlock over 50 months. |
| Core contributors | 30% | Different schedules for early contributors and Mysten Labs; see the current release schedule. |
| Investors | 7% | Unlock begins 12 months after Mainnet launch. |
WAL is used to prepay for data storage, delegate stake to storage nodes and participate in protocol governance. The token page describes planned burning and slashing mechanisms; where the Foundation says a feature will be introduced or enabled in the future, it should not be presented as already active.
Can staking WAL qualify for a future airdrop?
The August 2025 distribution demonstrates that direct staking has been used as a criterion, and Walrus' published allocation reserves 6% of supply for post-Mainnet user drops. Its 2025 announcement also said more opportunities were expected. None of those facts guarantees that current staking will receive another allocation, and no new official snapshot or formula was found for this update.
Native WAL staking is a real financial transaction, not a free testnet task. Walrus epochs last about two weeks. A stake submitted after the midpoint of an epoch may not earn until the following cycle, and native unstaking can take one to two epochs—roughly 14 to 28 days. Only nodes in the current committee produce rewards. Liquid-staking protocols can provide transferable receipt tokens, but they introduce separate smart-contract, operator, liquidity and depeg risks.
What changed since the March 2025 guide?
- Mainnet and WAL launched as scheduled on 27 March 2025; the airdrop is no longer speculative.
- The old
stake.walrus.sitetestnet interface no longer responds. The current official Mainnet staking site isstake-wal.wal.app. - Testnet WAL has no monetary value and cannot be converted into Mainnet WAL through the current testnet faucet workflow.
- The pre-Mainnet NFT allocation was 4% of supply, while the overall user-drop allocation is 10%.
- Walrus completed another distribution for direct stakers using a 30 June 2025 snapshot; liquid-staking positions were not included.
- The official claim portal remains online, but historical activity without an Airdrop NFT is not sufficient to claim.
Original 25 March 2025 guide (historical archive)
The guide below is preserved substantially as published. It describes the pre-Mainnet testnet flow and should not be followed as current eligibility instructions.
Walrus Protocol ($WAL) is a decentralized storage and data availability protocol designed for large binary files, ensuring high availability and reliability on decentralized storage nodes while leveraging the Sui blockchain for coordination and payments. Their mainnet will launch on 27th March 2025 and it is expected they may do a Walrus Protocol ($WAL) token airdrop on the same day! Here is our Walrus Protocol ($WAL) token airdrop guide.
What is Walrus Protocol ($WAL)?
Walrus Protocol ($WAL) is a decentralized storage and data availability protocol designed for large binary files, ensuring high availability and reliability on decentralized storage nodes while leveraging the Sui blockchain for coordination and payments. Here are some of Walrus Protocol’s main features:
- Cost-Effective Blob Storage: Allows for the uploading of gigabytes of data at minimal cost, with data transmitted only once over the network.
- High Availability and Robustness: Ensures data recovery even if two-thirds of the storage nodes fail, with efficient certification of data availability.
- Decentralized Storage: Provides better guarantees for digital assets, ensuring users own the actual resource, not just metadata.
- Support for Various Use Cases: Suitable for storing media for NFTs, AI-related data sets, blockchain history, and more.
- Scalability: Powered by the Sui Network, it scales horizontally to hundreds or thousands of decentralized storage nodes, offering Exabytes of storage at competitive costs.
How to get the Walrus Protocol ($WAL) token airdrop?
- Access Walrus Protocol testnet Go to https://stake.walrus.site/ and connect your Sui wallet. On your Sui wallet, click on the settings button, and switch from “Mainnet” to “Testnet” mode.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Walrus WAL airdrop still active?
The historical eligibility snapshots are complete, so users cannot farm them now. The official NFT redemption portal is still online, however, and a wallet that already holds an eligible Walrus Airdrop NFT can check there.
What is the official WAL airdrop claim website?
Walrus' terms identify https://claim.walrus.xyz as the only WAL claim website. Do not trust a lookalike domain, sponsored search result or claim link sent by direct message.
Can I claim WAL without the airdrop NFT?
No. For the announced NFT distributions, the eligible NFT held in the qualifying Sui wallet is the claim ticket. Testnet transactions alone do not create a current entitlement.
When did Walrus Mainnet launch?
Walrus publicly launched Mainnet on 27 March 2025. Its production network uses WAL for storage payments and staking, while Sui provides on-chain coordination and gas.
How many WAL tokens exist?
WAL has a maximum supply of five billion tokens. Walrus reports an initial circulating supply of 1.25 billion at launch.
How much WAL supply is allocated to airdrops?
The Walrus user-drop allocation is 10% of total supply: 4% for the pre-Mainnet distribution and 6% for post-Mainnet distributions. That allocation does not establish the timing or eligibility for any future round.
Who qualified for the August 2025 WAL staker airdrop?
More than 80,000 wallets qualified from a 30 June 2025 snapshot. Walrus considered direct WAL staking amount, time and consistency, with a minimum of five WAL staked for at least one full day. Liquid-staking positions were excluded.
Will staking WAL now guarantee another airdrop?
No. Walrus has reserved supply for post-Mainnet user distributions and has rewarded stakers before, but no current snapshot, formula or guaranteed new airdrop was published in the sources reviewed.
How long does it take to unstake WAL?
Native unstaking takes one to two Walrus epochs, roughly 14 to 28 days. The timing depends on when the request is submitted within the current two-week epoch.
Do testnet WAL tokens have value?
No. Walrus documentation says Testnet WAL has no value and can be obtained by exchanging Testnet SUI for development. It is separate from Mainnet WAL and does not imply a future airdrop allocation.
