Revolutionary AI Chip in Development by Meta: Empowering the Future

Meta has announced the development of its first custom chip designed to run AI models, as part of its efforts to introduce AI agents to billions of people.

Tech giant Meta has unveiled its inaugural custom chips, the MTIA for AI model processing and MSVP for video transcoding. CEO Mark Zuckerberg sees “an opportunity to introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful”, and the chip and other infrastructure plans revealed Thursday could be critical tools for Meta to compete with other tech giants also switching in AI. The MTIA chip is an in-house accelerator chip family designed for inference workloads, supporting the company’s efforts.

What is MTIA?

The company has announced the development of a new chip called the MTIA. This chip is custom-designed to deliver superior computing power and efficiency compared to standard CPUs. It is specifically optimized for handling Meta’s internal workloads.

Combining the MTIA chip with GPUs, Meta aims to enhance performance, reduce latency, and improve efficiency for workloads. The chip’s 2025 release could greatly benefit Meta, considering the rising demand for AI computing power.

Meta Unveils MSVP

They also introduced a new ASIC specifically designed to help with video transcoding. The Meta Scalable Video Processor (MSVP) is designed to support both high-quality transcodings for VOD and low latency and faster processing times for live streaming.

In the future, the MSVP will help bring AI-made content, and AR- and VR-specific content to Meta’s apps. This new ASIC will help users to create and deliver high-quality video content faster and more efficiently. It will also help Meta’s users to stay ahead of the competition in the ever-evolving video streaming industry.

Meta’s Next-Gen Data Center and RSC AI Supercomputer

The company is designing an AI-optimized data center that is faster and more cost-effective to construct. They also boast of their Research SuperCluster (RSC) AI Supercomputer, which they believe is one of the fastest AI supercomputers in the world.
