Uptrennd ($1UP): A “community first” Facebook alternative

Uptrennd ($1UP) is a decentralised social network. With the rise in social media networks, privacy risk and user data concerns are gradually increasing. At present, every user on the internet wants to be safe while using these applications. Centralized social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have failed to provide their users with secure and reliable systems that protect their data. Hence platforms like Uptrennd are emerging as an alternative.

    Background

Jeff Kirdeikis, the Founder of Uptrennd laid the foundation for the platform in January 2019. He poised it as “the next evolution of social media“. Kirdeikis is a cryptocurrency enthusiast who owns the world’s largest crypto Facebook group Cryptocurrency Investing. He is also the host of The Bitcoin & Crypto Podcast.

Back in 2017, as tech giants Facebook, Google and Twitter had banned cryptocurrency-based advertisements, decentralized social media platforms such as Steemit, Weku, D.Live etc rose to prominence. However, those platforms were also embroiled in their own controversies. For example, Steemit was taken over by Tron (which itself was highly controversial amongst Steemit users) and caused members to invoke a soft fork to reduce Steemit and Tron’s voting power. However, the soft fork failed and users accused Tron and 3 popular cryptocurrency exchanges for gaming the outcome.

Jeff and his team recognized this rising concern and was witness to this drama which tore the community apart. And thus, Uptrennd was created to overcome issues currently plaguing all those other decentralised platforms. Uptrennd distinguishes itself from everything else by being “community first”, as quoted by Kirdeikis himself.

    https://twitter.com/JeffKirdeikis/status/1234660384633524226

To this day, Uptrennd is a standard web 2.0 website that didn’t go through any seed funding or any initial coin offering (ICO).

    What is Uptrennd?

Uptrennd is an incentive-based social media platform that offers earning opportunities to its users for creating quality and original content. The platform is designed with a modern touch to support four fundamental factors :

    • Freedom of speech
    • Data Security
    • Equality of opportunity
    • Fair distribution of wealth

Additionally, Uptrennd plans to invest 80% of all generated revenue back into the platform to create a trusted and profitable social economy. On the whole, Uptrennd’s introduction truly signifies the start of a new era in the social media industry, one that incentivizes its users above all.

It has designed amazing gamification features with a levelling up system. This allows users to increase their rewards from their upvoted content submissions & comments as they level up their account with the native “1Up” token.

    What is 1UP Token?

1UP is an ERC-20 token that functions as the native asset on the Uptrennd platform. 1UP token follows the core upvoting system, which is more commonly referred to as points.

These points can be earned by doing all sorts of activities like posting, commenting, viewing posts, etc. And, users can exchange them for 1UP tokens. At present, one point is worth one 1UP token.

It is worth noting that the value of 1 upvote will not always be worth 1 token. In the future, the value may increase to 100+ points to earn one token. Thus, the platform provides value to early holders and adopters. Furthermore, it ensures that the 1UP token economy is infinitely scalable.

    1UP Tokenomics

Overall, 1,000,000,000 tokens were pre-mined and kept securely in cold storage. The tokens will be taken only when users withdraw them from their points earned on the platform. Moreover, the network has pledged to make 1UP a deflationary token.

Uptrennd burns 30% of points used by active members of the platform to level up each month. 30% of each point is burnt from the total supply that is used to boost, level up, or make on-site purchases. For instance, if 10 million points are used, the platform burns 3 million tokens.

This means that 1UP will become increasingly more scarce with each month passing, like any deflationary asset.

In addition, the platform is also distributing an extra 20% of the invested amount to the community growth fund. At present, there are nearly 900 million tokens in Uptrennd’s cold-storage and about 100 million tokens in the circulating supply.

The token is currently available on exchanges like Uniswap, P2PB2B, Altilly, Idex, and more.

How Does Uptrennd Let Users Earn Points?

Apart from content creation and interaction, users can also earn points on Uptrennd using the following ways:

    1. Receiving an upvote on your comment or post
    2. Earning by Sharing – you can earn 50% of the points when you Repost.
    3. Collecting donations from active members of the platform.
    4. Daily Activity Bonus (requires at least 10 visits per day)
    5. Monthly and Weekly contests
    6. Inviting new users onto the platform
    7. Exchanging tokens for points.

Basically, when a single upvote in Uptrennd is sold, it is worth $0.05. However, the company explains that in the event that a token exceeds $0.05 on exchanges, then the price of the points will increase as well. According to the website, the main objective of the platform is “maintaining a 10% premium to incentivize purchases on exchanges for liquidity.

Moreover, the company also claimed that “if the price drops below that $0.05 limit, the value will not change, this is termed as [the] floor price.

    Use Cases of 1UP Token

The platform provides multiple ways for users to use their earned points.

    1. Users can use the tokens to level up their accounts. For each additional level-up, the platform provides access to increase the reward earned for each upvoted post or comment.
    2. One can easily boost their own post for a specific number of views with 1UP tokens.
    3. Users can purchase banner advertisements on the platform with 1UP tokens. Furthermore, 80% of advertisement earnings are given back to the community.
    4. Users can donate tokens to others as tips. In addition, one can use it as a bounty for accomplishing particular tasks announced by the user.
    5. Users can sell their 1Up tokens on a third-party exchange for fiat or any other cryptocurrency.
    6. The platform also plans to allow users to utilize their 1UP tokens to unlock user-created exclusive communities that are based on subscription.

    Uptrend – Future Implementation

According to Jeff, Uptrend is now entering the decentralised finance (DeFi) space with multiple implementations and partnerships. The DeFi features will include

    • Fixed APY Staking
    • Liquidity Mining
    • Staking rewards based on network activity

Apart from DeFi, it is making big moves in other areas like Android and iOS mobile apps, raising capital, and Direct FIAT onramp to 1UP tokens. The platform is also looking forward to listing 1UP tokens on top exchanges.

    Conclusion

Uptrennd has now become one of the world’s most-engaged decentralized social media platforms. It has provided an opportunity for entrepreneurs, writers, hobbyists, and other part-time workers to monetize their skills and passion.

With all its innovative use cases, it appears that the platform is trying to become the next big thing among all decentralized social media networks. Overall, it has the ability to bring increased visibility & engagements to its user’s content by providing incentives via cryptocurrency rewards.

Live Planet VR Review: Camera from the Future?

    LivePlanet VR Review

Live Planet VR is a camera from the future – it records using 16 individual lenses for a full Virtual Reality experience. It’s an all-in-one camera solution that directly records 360° stereoscopic Virtual Reality video. The device itself looks crazy – it has 16 cameras directly on the rig, it almost feels excessive. What’s special about the device is that the video directly records to a stereoscopic VR video file that’s ready to upload – without the need to manually “stitch” the files together. This is a huge contrast to other 360° camera systems such as the insta360 one that requires lengthy post-rendering to create usable files. In this review we’ll look at the functionality, quality and publishing platform LivePlanet.

    VR Camera Review

    Live Planet VR camera closeup

The VR camera consists of the main camera module (housing 16 cameras) and external battery. The camera directly records to the desired 360° view or to 180° with selectable angle. Video recorded is stereoscopic – separate video data corresponding two what our 2 eyes would see. Having stereoscopic video is what makes Live Planet VR different other systems, as only this type of video will give a true VR experience.

    Camera Setup

The VR camera can be directly mounted onto tripods via the 1/4″ screw on the bottom of the device. The external battery (Juicebox V-Mount Battery) can be mounted using a V-clamp which comes with the set. Whilst I found having an external battery to be quite a hassle (especially if you really need to capture something fast!), this type of setup is standard in professional filmography. Access to the camera is over wifi on a smartphone with the LivePlanet VR app. The app has a live preview of the two angles the camera sees along with recording settings (4K or 6K video, video profile).

As control of the camera relies heavily on the smartphone, we found that some occasional connection issues that caused minor nuisance when recording. Sometimes the app doesn’t find the camera even after connection to the camera’s wifi-hotspot. We found that manually disconnecting the phone’s mobile data connection improves connection reliability.

USB - OTG is needed for external audio input. There is no on-board audio
USB – OTG is needed for external audio input. There is no on-board audio

Audio needs to be connected separately via USB type-A connection. This is the weakest part of the system. I was recommended a Zoom H5 over an USB connection, adapted with an USB OTG cable. (https://theownerbuildernetwork.co/)

    Setup: 3.5/5

    Camera Quality

Camera performs well in well-lit conditions, such as outdoors filming or in brightly lit studios. This makes sense as the 16 on-board cameras are a-kin to camera modules found on most smartphones. The onboard computer makes reasonable determinations of the lighting condition – with light, medium and dark options for exposure. Color temperature can be manually adjusted (which is great for filming long events). In terms of quality, we found the 4K video to be soft in some situations, with occasional video artefacts.

Low-light is when the camera starts showing weaknesses. Images start getting soft and grainy.

    Camera Quality: 4.5/5

    Live Planet Video Platform

    LivePlant VR Studio Dashboard
    LivePlant VR Studio Dashboard

LivePlanet VR offers direct VR publishing and viewing, fully catering to the camera’s capabilities. Camera content can be uploaded directly from the camera and even streamed lived for major events. We found that upload times are reasonable and equivalent to other major content platforms like YouTube.

Live Planet offers both VR viewing (via the app) or browser based mono-scopic videos. We found this to be a huge plus as many of our viewers don’t have VR headsets. One problem we found was that the playback quality can be choppy at times, depending on where the video is viewed from. This could improve with time.

    Publishing Platform: 4/5

Verdict: Huge leaps for VR video creation

Live Planet VR camera marks a huge leap for VR content creation. It allows for the easy creation of stereoscopic VR, sometime that is normally hard to access. Publishing is streamlined with the Live Planet VR platform.

We found that sometimes the video quality could be soft and lacking in sharpness, especially in low light scenarios. The lack of 3.5mm or XLR inputs makes audio on this camera hard to setup. We found the USB OTC dongle + Zoom H5 combo the longest to setup (especially if the cable connection isn’t stable).

Boxmining Camera and Recording Gear List

The age of YouTube has brought a new medium of communication and sharing – we can now share out thoughts and insights in 4K videos real time. I want to share my passion of making videos with you and reveal some of my secrets and tricks to get good quality videos produced on time. One of the big reasons why the Boxmining Channel grew was because I was able to get coverage of important events on time and share insights with the community.

    Studio Setup

    • Logitech Brio 4K
    • Sony a7III with Sony 55mm F1.8 lens
    • (Lights) Yongnou YN360 II Color LED Lights x2
    • (Lights) Elgato Keylight x2
    • (Capture Card) Elgato Camlink 4k
    • (Controller) Elgato Stream Deck
    • (Recording Software) Streamlabs OBS
    • (Editing Software) Adobe Premiere
    • (Editing Software) Final Cut X (sometime)

I don’t have a big space to record my videos, so I try to make the best of it. I primarily use the Logitech Brio (it’s cheap and always ready to go, especially when we need to cover emergency events). For wider shots I have the Sony a7III which is connected to the computer via the camlink 4k – so I can switch cameras during live shows.

The rest of the stuff makes look like an Elgato shill, but the whole ecosystem system is pretty amazing. The Elgato Stream Deck is for switch between scenes and controlling the lighting.

    Sound Setup

This sound setup has to be honest a nightmare to get working well. I love the way the Shure SM7B sounds, especially since it’s directional and cuts out the noise from the nearby fans and air-conditioner unit. The only problem with the SM7B is that it’s very quiet requires a very good pre-amp. With help from Cameron (CryptoDaily), I got the Sound Devices Mix Pre-6.
The preamps on the Mix Pre-6 is good enough to use the SM7B without a cloudlifter.

    Vlog Setup

Osmo Pocket delivers a smooth, usable video.

The Vlog setup is what I use when I’m travelling between conferences, meetups and even vacations. This is great for videos on the go or with motion in the background. Personally I don’t like carrying a lot bulky video equipment – nothing is worse than carrying a heavy tripod and camera case.

    • Osmo Pocket ($299) with audio 3.5mm audio adapter
    • Rode – VideoMic Pro+ ($299)

The main choice here is to use the Osmo Pocket as my main video camera. As a handheld Gimbal, the Osmo Pocket makes walking and talking scenes much more watchable. It’s also small enough to fit into my pocket most of the time. Unfortunately, the built in sound is pretty bad, so the audio adapter highly recommended.

    Conference Setup

This setup is my go to setup for conferences and event coverage, mainly due to the versatility and low light performance. The Sony a7III performs extremely well in low light conditions, making it perfect for dimly lit rooms or conference venues.

Vechain Summit 2019 Interview with Vechain CEO Sunny Lu
    • Sony a7III
      • Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM Lens
      • Sony 16-35mm F4 Lens
    • (Vlog Mic) Rode – VideoMic Pro+
    • (Conference) Sennheiser AVX Set ($999)

The Sony a7III really shines – with a large battery and excellent video capabilities. When paired with the 24-70mm lens, the results look good (although it’s VERY heavy to carry).

Today we find out what camera and recording gear CryptoDaily uses to create his awesome content, direct from the man himself!

    CryptoDaily Camera and Gear Setup
    CryptoDaily Camera and Gear Setup

Main Camera – Canon 1DX Mark ii Lens – Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens Viewfinder – SmallHD 5inch
This camera again is totally unnecessary, but it gives great colour accuracy, sharp image and smooth 50fps. The 4k quality is quite important because it allows you to punch in without losing image quality.

Side Camera – Canon 80D Lens – Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens This is the part of my setup I am least happy with. The lack of 4k quality on it is in stark contrast to the main camera, but provides 50fps smooth image also. The ultrawide lens is important so it can be quite close to you in an office without looking like it is.

    Display – 49-Inch 5k Super Ultrawide Display – Dell U4919DW
Totally unecessary, but it does allow me to have notes on the side, my main window being recorded in the middle, and my OBS on the other side as though it was a triple monitor setup with no bezels.

    Mic – Shure SM7B Mixer –
Yamaha MG10XU I love the sound of this mic. I’ve tried many in the past, nothing is better for podcast audio in my opinion.

    Monitor Speakers – Audioengine A5+
Ideally you edit with a pair of quality headphones, but I try to be wireless where I can. This are monitor speakers so ideally what I am hearing is what most people will also have recreated when watching my videos.

    Keyboard – Logitech G613

    Mouse – Razer Mamba Wireless

PC – GTX 1080 graphics card, 8700K CPU, 32gb Ram, Maximus X Motherboard, NZXT AIO, NZXT Case, 4TB Samsung SSD.
